A Summer Internship at UCSD
by Dexter Roberts, Class of 2012
During the summer of 2011, I and several other local high school students participated in a two-week internship in the labs at the University of California San Diego (UCSD), learning first-hand about medical clinical research. The internship course was funded by SEPA (Science Education Partnership Award). The goal of SEPA is to inform and teach students about clinical research and to strengthen their knowledge of the sciences through lectures and hands-on lab experiments. Our classes were held each weekday from 8:30 a.m. to 3:30 p.m., with an hour lunch break at noon. Every day our professor, Dr. Park Trefts, presented lectures to us and monitored our involvement in lab experiments. Following lunch, Dr. Trefts aide, Mr. Lemar Slater, taught us statistics and led us through experiments involving blood pressure, heart rate, and hand grip strength.
On the first day of our classes we received lab coats, safety glasses, name tags and workbooks, and we were assigned to a specific group of two or three students. Each group, armed with knowledge gained from the lectures, worked on experiments which dealt with the concentration and absorbance of solutions, heart rate, and blood pressure. We learned how to properly use laboratory tools such as pipettes, spectrometers, pi-pumps, cuvettes, centrifuge tubes, microscopes, and the high-tech Lab Quest Logger Pro. Our very last experiment, the sea urchin fertilization experiment, was the most interesting and exciting. Our professor caught several sea urchins and brought them to the lab to fertilize and examine their eggs via our microscopes.
In addition to the daily experiments and lectures, we were frequently visited by several very notable and distinguished scientists, such as Dr. Gerry Boss, Dr. Eduardo Fricovsky, Dr. Shirley Webber, Dr. P.J. Russell, and others who told us about their careers in science. Each gave us a brief presentation about their current research, their procedural processes, and their daily work in their areas of clinical research. I was impressed that their fields of research were difficult, yet fascinating areas of study.
Dr. Boss’s work was fascinating. He is researching an antidote to cyanide which could be administered to victims in the event of a terrorist attack or industrial accident. Dr. Fricovsky’s research was equally fascinating. He is studying Type-2 Diabetes and the effects of enzymatic protein glycosylation on mice hearts.
This internship was a brief and challenging glimpse for me and my fellow classmates into a world of new medical research frontiers. It was quite an exciting experience to be on the UCSD campus each day, working in a lab, and being surrounded by successful scientists who took the time to teach me more science. I strongly recommend summer internships like this for all high school students. It is a great means to increase your knowledge of science, help you more carefully consider course of study you want to pursue in college, and inform you of career choices that may be available to you following graduation from college.
